Kakolat Waterfall, located in Nawada district, is known for its mesmerizing beauty. Situated amidst the scenic hills of Ektara in the Govindpur block, the waterfall cascades down step by step from a height of approximately 160 feet, with the Lohabar River presenting an unforgettable sight as it flows through the Hazaribagh mountain range. The waterfall is most enchanting right after the monsoon season when it is in full flow.
It is believed that this waterfall served as a playground for Lav-Kush, who were born in Sitamarhi, also located in Nawada district. During the Treta Yuga, a king was cursed by a sage and transformed into a snake, residing at this spot. It is said that during the Dwapar Yuga, the Pandavas visited this place during their exile. Inspired by Lord Krishna, Draupadi observed the Chhath festival and offered prayers to the Sun God in this stream, thereby freeing the king from his curse. To this day, it is believed that bathing in this water frees one from the serpent's curse, attracting numerous visitors from far and wide. The Vishu Mela is organized here on the occasions of Baisakhi and Chaitra Sankranti. This fair is also considered the formal beginning of visits to Kakolat, as it is celebrated at the onset of summer.
On May 27, 2022, during his visit to Kakolat, Honorable Chief Minister of Bihar, Shri Nitish Kumar, directed the initiation of development works for eco-tourism at the site. Previously, tourism at this location was disorganized, often leading to unfortunate incidents. Considering these inconveniences faced by tourists, a development project for Kakolat Waterfall was prepared. The Kakolat Waterfall project is being carried out in two phases.
Phase 1 of the project includes the construction of a pool, renovation of the water pool area, rock stabilization works, and the development of basic facilities such as changing rooms, toilets, gazebos, a viewpoint area, a water treatment plant, parking facilities, a cloakroom, electrification, construction of a natural stone pool in the lower part of the waterfall for children and the elderly, an administrative block, staff dormitory, forest rest house, and other protective structures.
Phase 2 includes the reinforcement of stairs, installation of railings, development of a children's park, construction of 60 shops in the vending zone, wooden bridges, fencing work, a security wall, and other related works.
On August 3, 2024, Kakolat Waterfall was inaugurated by Shri Nitish Kumar, the Honourable Chief Minister of Bihar, and was finally opened to tourists.
